MADDO Dairies Ltd. (MDL) is a dairy processing factory and a registered limited company by guarantee with the registration number 80020001453990. It is a social-economic enterprise supporting farmers by providing a ready market and adding value to their milk. The organization is now implementing its second strategic plan running from 2023-2027.
In 1993, Caritas MADDO started the dairy project by giving a heifer to three farmers from Heifer Project International (HPI), that were donated by Bothar-Ireland with an intended objective to improve nutrition, food and income security among the people of Masaka Diocese. Numbers of beneficiaries increased as well as the production of milk after intensive training in sustainable agriculture and livestock management thus leading to a formation of a mini dairy in 2003 with support from Heifer Project International and Bothar-Ireland. Since then more families have benefitted from the program leading to an increase in milk production and to a formation of five milk collection centres under respective formed dairy farmer cooperatives. This initiative offers conveniently located collection points for famers to easily deliver and sell their raw milk to the company. MDL processes the collected milk into yoghurt, pasteurized and cultured milk in vanilla and strawberry flavours which are sold to the communities and schools in the Greater Masaka region. Inspired by the vision of the Catholic Church in the Greater Masaka Region and supported through the social development initiatives of Caritas, Maddo Dairies was established to create a sustainable market for smallholder dairy farmers while improving nutrition and household incomes. The initiative enjoys the moral support and stewardship of the Catholic Diocese of Masaka under the leadership of the Bishop of Masaka, while operating as an independent commercial enterprise governed by a professional Board of Directors and experienced management team.
Unlike many dairy processors that focus solely on milk procurement and product sales, Maddo Dairies was created with a broader mission—to transform lives throughout the dairy value chain. Every litre of milk purchased contributes to improving household incomes, supporting children’s nutrition, creating employment, and strengthening rural communities
